Wildlife Genomics

Wildlife Genomics

Globally wildlife species are facing anthropogenic pressures directly or indirectly such as habitat loss and alteration, direct mortality due to exploitation, introduction of invasive species, pollution and climate change. Under these conditions, it is crucial to improve our basic understanding of wildlife species and populations, including evolutionary history, adaptation to changing local environments and ecological interactions which further can be useful in conservation and management efforts in conserving the species. Advancement in molecular technologies like genome sequencing and/or SNP genotyping has revolutionized the field of wild life conservation, allowing high throughput sequencing to be applied in nearly any organism including rare and elusive species.

Applications:

  1. Identify populations and units for conservation
  2. Assess inbreeding and genomic diversity
  3. Understand the demographic histories, population structure and connectivity
  4. Estimate effective populations sizes
  5. Detect hybridization and admixture patterns
  6. Identify the potentiality of populations to persist and adapt to changes in the environment
